Your New Year’s Fitness Goals Are Already Late

Why you'll probably fail your New Year's resolution (and how to you can actually achieve them)

Ello,

I know what you’re going to say

“Sheep, it’s November, why the fuck are you talking about New Year resolutions?”

Yes, New Year isn’t for another 55 days, but hear me out first

We all know the clichés:

"New Year, New Me"

"2025’s My Year"

“Tomorrow is the first blank page of a 365-page book” 🤮

And whatever else gets tossed around at the start of January

Don’t get me wrong, I actually like the idea of New Year's resolutions

I’m all for a fresh start, and hey, if a random date at the start of the year can get people motivated, power to it

It’s a bit like the feeling before a new school year, getting a new pencil case, loading it up with fresh pens, a ruler you’ll only use twice, and a protractor because...maths?

But here’s the thing: your physical health is just a bit more important than a new school kit, yeah?

And if you wait ‘til January to start, you’re missing the point entirely

Everyone waits until January 1st to start (I know, obviously that’s the point), but here’s how that usually plays out:

New Year’s Eve

You’re out celebrating (because why wouldn’t you? It’s New Year's)

You’re feeling good, maybe you’ve booked that week off work and been celebrating since Christmas Eve. I mean it’s only once a year

New Year’s Day

So you start January with a killer hangover and a fridge that’s still packed with holiday leftovers

You’ll start going to the gym on Monday instead, right?

First Week of January

Gyms are packed with people who had the same plan as you. You’re squeezed out of the squat rack and can barely get in a workout

So you put off going for “a couple weeks,” what’s the harm?

By February

And then February rolls around. And everyone has started falling off the wagon again

The gyms are becoming a little bit more quiet. And then you realise that you've lost the mojo for the New Year's resolution because you are 31 days into the year

If you’re serious about achieving your goals, you need to start now

Yeah, I know it’s not as ‘glamorous’ as flipping the calendar to January 1st, but the difference is, starting now means you’ll have actual momentum by the time the New Year hits

A training & nutrition plan takes roughly 6-8 weeks to fully integrate into your life and become a habit, so you technically don't start until after that anyway

No excuses about hangovers or packed gyms — just real progress

Here’s the Breakdown:

  • Start Small, Start Now: If you kick things off today, you don’t need to go full tilt from day one. Start by hitting the gym two or three times a week, work on building a sustainable routine, and actually get familiar with the process. This way, by January, you’ll already know what works for you

  • Build Momentum Before January 1st: Progress doesn’t happen overnight, and it definitely doesn’t happen on some magical day in January. It happens through consistency, little by little, which means you’ve got to start laying the groundwork now if you want to hit January 1st with anything more than wishful thinking

  • Set Realistic Goals and Ditch the Pressure: New Year's Resolutions usually fail because they’re too big, too fast. A solid routine is the result of trial and error, patience, and finding what you can actually stick to. January isn’t some fresh, blank slate, it’s just another month in the year, so start with realistic goals today and build them up

Bottom line: if you’re actually serious about getting fitter in the New Year, start working on it right now. Let the other resolutioners have their January chaos, and you’ll be the one walking into February with the consistency they still haven’t built

Ready to start for real? This isn’t a pep talk — it’s a reality check. If you’re looking to make those fitness goals stick, don’t waste another day waiting for a January miracle. Let's talk about setting you up with coaching that actually works, starting now
