Ey up,

Why are we so food obsessed in the UK?

I’m serious. Why does every single social occasion need catering for an army?

It’s like every social situation is going to be our last and from here on out we’re on rations.

It doesn’t matter what the occasion is,birthdays, work meetings, a trip to the bloody park, someone’s bringing some form of food 🍕🍪

For my 22nd birthday we went bowling. My mum asked what food I wanted bringing.

Now, every year we usually turn up with enough beige food for 25 people despite there being less than 10 of us.

So I said, “Actually, can we just not bring food this year? It’d make my day to just spend time together without food taking over.”

She said that was fine.

Fast forward to the day: two cakes, five tubes of Pringles, and multiple pizzas turn up 🫠

That’s when it clicked for me.

We don’t do this because we’re HUNGRY.

We do it because we’re weirdly UNCOMFORTABLE without food there.

It’s like a nervous tick.

As if not having snacks in arm’s reach will somehow ruin the day.

But it’s not normal.

It’s British.

And considering how obese we are as a nation, maybe it’s time we stop pretending it’s just “part of the culture” 😬

I hated my weight growing up

As a kid, as a teenager, and in my early 20s.

And a big part of that was this idea that every social event had to revolve around food.

I’ve had to say no to a lot of that to get where I am now.

It doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy food anymore, it just means I finally see it for what it is.

It’s not the main event.

It’s just food.

Cheers,
