Does Exercise = Food Freedom?

My take on 'earning your calories'

Alright, let’s get into it.

It’s 2024, and we’re somehow still circling around the debate about “earning your food”

So there’s this video I saw the other day

Guy 1 goes on about how he exercises so he can eat more, and Guy 2 jumps in calling it toxic, saying you shouldn't have to "earn" your food.

But here’s the thing, you kind of do

Let’s break it down: calories are a unit of energy.

Use energy? You need energy back.

Don’t use it? Well, you don’t need more of it.

But we’re living in a world of hyper-caloric foods, an all-time high in obesity rates, and lifestyles that are more sedentary than ever (especially in the UK, where everything social revolves around eating and drinking)

So yeah, there’s some truth to the “earn it” mindset

Now, let me clarify, if the only reason you’re training is to “earn” food, that’s a quick route to burnout

But if enjoying a pizza after a hard workout is one of your reasons for training?

I honestly don’t see a problem

Nutritional freedom can be one part of a healthy approach to fitness

Here’s just a few things I’ve been eating lately, all while losing weight and maintaining a calorie deficit ⚖️

It’s not all nutritional and health-focused

It’s also not all salads and rabbit food

What’s wrong with wanting the freedom to eat more, as long as you’re balancing that with real performance goals and a mindset rooted in health?

I’m fully aware that the “earning food” mentality can be damaging, especially for those who have struggled with eating disorders. If that’s you, you might not agree with this perspective, (and that’s completely valid)

This take isn’t one-size-fits-all

But here’s what I do take issue with: this whole “love yourself” culture often gets twisted to mean accepting unhealthy habits or encouraging indulgence, all in the name of “self-love”

To me, self-love should be about striving to be the healthiest, best version of yourself.

And if we’re being real, being unhealthy, whether that’s eating for the sake of it, ignoring what our bodies need, or constantly sitting in a surplus, doesn’t fit that definition

Just my two cents.
