Ey up,
Every winter I see the same thing.
People say they’re “on a bulk.”
Translation: they’ve given themselves permission to eat like a toddler left unsupervised in a Tesco sweets aisle 🙄
Pizza every night. Share bag of Dairy Milk on the sofa. Six pints every weekend.
And when they look like a bloated mess by January?
Suddenly it’s “ah well, bulking season innit.”
No, mate. That’s not bulking. That’s just being lazy and calling it strategy.
What a bulk actually is
Bulking is about eating slightly above your maintenance calories.
Enough to fuel more training volume, more recovery, and more muscle growth.
Not a free-for-all where you double your body fat and pretend it’s “mass.”
How to tell if you’re doing it wrong
❌ If you’re gaining more than 1–2lbs a month, you’re probably just adding fat.
❌ If your lifts aren’t going up but your waistline is, you’re not bulking, you’re bingeing.
❌ If 70% of your calories are beige carbs, takeaways, and beer, you’re digging yourself a hole you’ll hate cutting out of later.
How to do it right (without turning into a blob)
✅ Eat mostly the same as you do in a fat-loss phase: protein, fruit, veg, balanced meals.
✅ Add 200–300 calories of mostly protein and carbs on top of your maintenance calories (chicken, mince, tofu, rice, oats, potatoes, nut butter).
✅ Track strength in the gym. If the logbook isn’t moving up, you’re not actually bulking.
✅ Accept that you’ll gain some fat, but if you’re honest with yourself, you know when you’ve crossed the line.
Bulking isn’t sexy
It’s slow. It’s boring. And it’s controlled.
It’s not smashing Domino’s three times a week.
The people who do it right? They look leaner at 90kg than most do at 75kg 🔥
The people who do it wrong? They “bulk” to 100kg and then spend 18 months crying their way back down to 80kg…
