Aussie gyms are a bit shit

Not what you'd think aye?

No clickbait, genuinely gyms here aren’t that great, and I’ll tell you why…

They’re not a priority here!

Seems weird that right? Australia, fitness capital of the world, everyone’s fit and healthy, why aren’t the gyms that good?

Simply put, the GYM isn’t that popular as a means of staying fit.

In the UK it’s raining, it’s windy, it’s grey, it’s dark, and to go play a game of 5-a-side footy it’ll send you back a tenner for half an hour of being kicked the fuck out of by a bald 40 year old who’s wife left him and his only aggressive outlet is that 30 mins on some astroturf.

Sounds specific that doesn’t it, yet it’s a reality a load of us have probably been through.

In australia people surf, people run, they play volleyball, they rock-climb, they hike, rugby, aussie rules, tennis, padel, swimming, hyrox, crossfit etc… and THEN you have your regular gym stuff.

And I think this is veryyyyyyyy telling of our attitude to the gym.

I think most of us would MUCH rather play a sport than go and lift weights in the same 4 walls 4 x a week.

With the gym acting as a SUPPLEMENT to said sport.

Whereas because we have shite weather in the UK, and outdoor sports are more inconvenient (both from a financial standpoint AND logistically with the weather)…

We’re forced to fund gyms more than anything else.

So we now have fantastic gyms (we truly do, I’d say besides america/Canada we’re world leading)…

But poor sports availability.

Which to me is backwards. Because 4 times as many people would enjoy playing sports, over lifting weights. So as a means of keeping our population healthy, it truly feels like we’re prioritising the wrong stuff.

But hey, that’s just my opinion.

An opinion that will likely develop and have things added and subtracted to it the longer I stay here.

I’ll let you know if my insights go any further!
